Planning your visit to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a semicircle of concentric canals, and orienting yourself is mostly knowing whether you are heading into the ring or out of it. The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh and the Stedelijk share one square to the south, Museumplein; the medieval centre and the Red Light District lie north, and Jordaan, to the west, is the district of small shops and hidden courtyards.

The Anne Frank House sells only timed online tickets and is the hardest booking in the city: slots are released weeks ahead and vanish within hours. Bikes are the real transport here, with their own lanes and right of way; if you are walking, stay out of the red asphalt. The canals look different from the water, and the windmills of Zaanse Schans are half an hour away by train.
