Planning your visit to Barcelona
Barcelona makes sense by neighbourhood. The Gòtic and El Born are the old town, all narrow lanes and hidden squares; the Eixample is the 19th-century grid holding Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and the Sagrada Família; and Barceloneta is the beach, fifteen minutes from the centre. The metro is quick and reaches almost everything.
The Sagrada Família and Park Güell use timed entry and sell out in high season, especially June to September, so booking before you fly saves a wasted trip. The basilica towers need a separate ticket and are worth it. As in any major tourist city, keep an eye on your bag on Las Ramblas and the metro. Spring and autumn give the best weather without the August crush.
